ABOUT

Meet the creator

I am Andrea aka Spikez. Ever since I was conscious, I've had a passion for creative arts. I love painting and writing poetry. I was born and raised in the Chihuahuan Desert. I've lived between Cd. Juarez, El Paso and southern New Mexico. One of my greatest pleasures in life is listening to music. My taste is deathrock, post-punk and other genres like new wave, darkwave and EBM. I am a mother of three: two humans and one feline.

Why?

I started Gravesilk out of love for creating. I wanted to create something that incorporates fashion with my personal style and creative visions. One day, I was putting on my choker that was on the verge of breaking and I thought, "why don't I try making a better one myself?" So, I started by making a few with vegan leather. I have been pescatarian for 8 years, but I was fully vegetarian before that. Ever since I was 4 years old, I refused to eat meat even though I didn't know what vegetarian meant and all the people I knew, ate meat. That contributed to me choosing to work with vegan leather in the beginning. Later on, I did research and concluded that I'd like to give cow leather a try. I was hesitant but I found a supplier that uses cowhide strictly from the meat industry's waste. Cowhide that if not turned into leather, would be tossed. I refuse to use luxury and exotic leather that may come from animals raised and slaughtered solely for that purpose. Although I admire vegans, I believe full grain leather is a great material since it lasts decades up to a century unlike faux leather which only lasts one to a few years. When I gave cowhide a try, I realized it's an art and there are so many more steps to it and skills you need to learn compared to the vegan leather I was using before that, but I learned to work with it like another art medium and continue to perfect my craft. I just ask that if you decide you no longer want one of my creations, please don't toss it. Repurpose, donate or give it to someone who might like it. I made it to last and wouldn't want it being tossed like fast fashion. Don't hesitate to contact me in case anything happens to your item.
